About the Bibliography

The History of Communication Research Bibliography is a searchable and continually updated collection of references related to the sub-field. The idea is to bring together scholars working on the history of mass communication research, rhetoric, film and media studies, and the sociology of media through the sharing of scholarly work.

The historiography of communication research, compared to literature generated by the other social sciences, is underdeveloped and all too frequently hagiographic. The relative weakness of much existing work results, in part, from the mutual isolation of scholars who work in scattered fields and without access to colleagues' complementary efforts.

HCRB is an attempt to connect researchers and their work to one another, with the hope that a self-conscious and rigorous subfield will begin to form. (With this goal in mind, planned expansions of the site include a directory of scholars as well as a searchable list of archives.)

The site and the bibliography are maintained by Jeff Pooley, assistant professor of Media & Communication at Muhlenberg College. Please send reports of errors and/or bibliography additions to Jeff Pooley.
